Hook & Crown launch

Today I launch Hook & Crown, a 2D single-player platformer where you control two characters, Rammel and Aelarion, across various levels, using their unique abilities to solve puzzles and face challenges. The game combines a dark, cartoonish aesthetic.

The process

This game was created during my first year of my undergraduate degree in Video Game Simulation and Production, applying knowledge of 2D art, programming, graphics engines, music composition, UX/UI and game design.

The idea started when I was taking the Video Game Creator Process course, in which we had to develop an idea applying concepts from the M.D.A. framework and document it in different formats, such as pitch, concept, proposal and game design documents.
At the same time in Art and Creativity I had to create an art book, so I decided to use the same game idea to enrich it even more. During this one I worked a lot on the character design, and I was totally inspired by the Tim Burton aesthetic, so I tried to do something like that but combined with a 2D style very similar to the cartoons I used to watch when I was a kid.

Here I attach the Artbook and the Proposal document, unfortunately both are outdated and only in Spanish for now, but I think they are important as part of the process. In the future I plan to update them and add, in the game, more of the characters I have designed here.

During the next four months I animated the characters in Opentoonz, created new assets and I developed the idea of the game in Unity with C# in Graphics Engines II, between each iteration I was testing and changing some things of the original idea in order to improve the player's experience. As for the code, the game is clearly made with the object oriented programming paradigm, it also includes a game save with binary formatter, state machines for the character animations and their behaviors, being the main challenge to develop the mechanics of both characters correctly.
See the project in Gitlab.
As a last point, I composed the music using Reaper for the Audio and Sound Production subject, trying to maintain the same atmosphere that I had already achieved in the visual section.
